World War I: 1916 – 1918

During The Great War 65 million people fought. 10 million of them died. In addition, the war has claimed the lives of 12 million civilians. As a result of the military conflict, four empires ceased to exist: Austro-Hungarian, German, Russian and Ottoman Empires. Battle of the Somme 1916

On July 1, 1916, in the course of World War I, the British-French forces attacked German positions near the river Somma in order to implement the joint strategic plan of the Entente. However, the result of the Anglo-French offensive was tragic – there were no targets set, and over 1 million 350 thousand people died on both sides.


The general offensive of the Entente countries simultaneously on all fronts in the spring of 1917 was unsuccessful. In April, the combined Anglo-French command attempted to attack the enemy in the Reims area. Seven weeks of heavy battles did not succeed. The French lost more than 500 thousand soldiers dead and wounded. In the French army riots broke out against the continuation of the senseless war.
In the east, in July 1917, the Russian troops launched an offensive in Lviv direction. But it cost them a new defeat and huge losses. German troops went on a counteroffensive. They finally beat Russians from Galicia, and also captured Riga.
In the meantime, the Italians, who suffered a crushing defeat under Caporetto in October 1917, suffered a failure, although they had a numerical advantage. Italian soldiers retreated in disarray. 300 thousand of them were captured, 130 thousand died. Only transferred from Nice to cars British and French divisions somewhat corrected the situation and prevented the departure of Italy from the war.
German troops moved to the west to win a definitive victory over the British and the French before arriving at the front of the American troops.

April 6, 1917, the United States officially entered World War One. The US Army took the most active part in the hostilities on the Western Front from October 1917 until the end of the war on November 11, 1918.

One of the outcomes of the war was a new balance of power in the international arena. The United States began to play the role of a creditor of European states, and, accordingly, their role in world politics increased. The world has acquired new outlines.

During the war, the state system of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Russia could not stand the test. Empire of Hohenzollern, Hapsburg, Romanov, Osman disintegrated. On their wrecks, new states arose. The influence of Japan has intensified. The colonial system was shaken.
