Why Is It Important to Study History?

For almost two and a half thousand years since the time of the “father of history” of Herodotus, dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of times have been expressed on the subject of necessity, usefulness, and even pleasantness of studying history. Witty essays, thick treatises, and even collected works are written about this.

In fact, the question, even if rhetorically, “why study history?” is just a little different from even more rhetorical questioning: “Does true love exist?” or “Is there life after death?”. Nevertheless, these questions are asked and all of them are answered in one way or another. Depending on the historical period, the collective or individual worldview, someone’s character, and even depending on the mood you can find the answer on each question.

No wonder, the connoisseurs of history, the ancient Greeks, called History “the teacher of life.” The study of history reveals to us the colorful world reality of the past. We become direct participants in the events that have sunk into oblivion, which have affected the formation of modern human society. History has no unimportant pages, because every century, living by mankind, bears an instructive and mentoring character.

The main difficulty in the study of history is that all historical facts are based on the writings of participants and observers of events. In most cases, they are filled with political subjectivism and show all the errors of their time. Therefore, the main thing in the study of history is that it is not enough just to state historical events, but also to track their influence on the subsequent time.
